  • Suggested Timeline for Feeding Jacoby's Alpha to Southdown Show Lambs in Preparation for January County Shows and Spring Major Show Competition

    Post Weaning and New Arrivals:
Straight Alpha- 30 to 45 days.

    July:
Straight Alpha plus a protein supplement. My personal choice would be Fitter 35 by Purina. Follow the label directions. This would apply to lambs that are easy fleshing and on target in terms of finish and maturity.
On lambs that are still way behind in finish and condition, the addition of Jacoby’s Omega as either as a top Dress or blended ration is your best approach. For a blended ration, mix 3/4 lb. Alpha with 1/4 lb. Omega.
This gives you a 15% protein, 4% fat, and 14% fiber ration, which is an ideal developing ration.

September- Into Tracking Season and Beyond:
Southdowns that are on target, can be managed very well with the straight Jacoby’s Alpha plus a good protein supplement. Tracking and tread-milling can help greatly with fat cover control, plus muscle expression can be amplified.

Pro Tip: For that final push to the finish line, I like the Purina Champion Drive Supplement, 75 to 90 days out from your most important Show Date. It is a complete supplement that feeds fat neutral but provides a high quality amino acid and lipid profile for enhanced muscle development. I am not affiliated with Purina, but I have seen first hand solid results with their Fitter 35 and Champion Drive. They partner well with all of our Jacoby Sheep and Goat feeds.

Note: I prefer to use Fitter 35 and or Champion Drive products separately and not in combination for most circumstances!
There are many good supplements on the market, by various companies, and you can apply this same concept with your choice of supplementation, as well.

The key to feeding Southdowns is staying on top of fat cover and not getting behind. All lambs feed differently, and “a one size fits all” is not the choice program with a pen of Southdowns. Each lamb must be carefully evaluated for condition and maturity over the feeding period, and feed choices and supplement decisions should be implemented on an individual basis.
