  • Metabolic Disease in Pregnant Ewes and Nannies

Spring lambing and kidding is underway with many producers having babies hitting the ground already. One of the most frustrating problems that can occur with pregnant females is metabolic disease. The old timers call it twin lamb disease, pregnancy sickness, and other similar terms. This syndrome occurs when the heavy bred female has an energy deficit, due to the high energy level demands of the fetal babies and simply can’t supply the babies and herself normally.

The symptoms of metabolic disease can in include the following. The female becomes lethargic, weak, and wobbly on her feet. Advanced cases the ewe or nanny goes down and can no longer stand. Another common symptom is that the mother will stand off by herself and look around, as if blind. Sometimes blindness ensues. Many times the metabolic imbalance results in keto acidosis. Generally over conditioned or obese mothers are more susceptible. Females that enter breeding season with poor condition scores are also more susceptible. Flocks that are under nourished due to poor quality grazing and then not supplemented with enough carbohydrates, protein, trace minerals, and vitamins will have a higher incidence rate.
Producers commonly increase grain supplementation and provide plenty of available hay to meet the nutritional needs of that ewe or nanny. Metabolic disease usually shows up in the 3rd trimester.

A great preventative measure, that can reduce the incidence of metabolic disease, is the use of tub licks to supplement the nutritional program. In addition to grain, hay, and free choice mineral, the addition of a good quality tub lick will provide additional energy, protein, trace minerals, and vitamins. Vitamin and mineral deficiency is another area that can lead to metabolic syndrome and other parturition problems.

Jacoby’s makes a great 21% sheep and goat tub lick (125 lb.)

I recommend keeping tub licks out from breeding season through lambing. A good quality tub lick can fill the gaps in a conventional nutrition program. They are easy and practical to use for any size operation. Tub Licks are Cheap Insurance! Producers, if we can help you with any nutrition needs, give us a call!
