With Stock Show season in full throttle, here’s some guidelines for hydration in show lambs and goats. Your lamb or goat needs water every 3-4 hours for optimum performance, while on the road and at the show. Volume varies by the size and species. I will use a range for sheep weighing 125 to 175 pounds and goats weighing 75 to 125 pounds. Lambs - 600cc to 1200cc (H2O) Goats - 300cc to 600cc In addition to feed, hay, and water, your animals will need some additional energy and electrolytes to be at their most competitive advantage. My choice for energy supplementation is still “dyne”. This versatile energy drench can be mixed with your electrolytes and water for convenience, drenched straight, or added to your feed (if they are use to that). 30 to 60cc during morning and evening feeding times. Do not exceed 120cc in a 24 hour period. There are many electrolyte options on the market. Pick a good complete electrolyte recommended for your particular species. I like to run straight water, alternated every other 3.5 hours with a weak electrolyte plus water. I prefer to use dyne after feeding morning and evening. This reduces gastric upset occurrences and buffers the richness of the dyne. Pro Tip - Some times less is more in the sheep and goat barn! A show lamb or goat that is in great shape and condition needs very little supplementation. A good quality feed, with plenty of fresh water goes a long way!
