Hay Considerations:
*Favorite weaving hay—good quality oat, wheat or triticale—Sudan hay or a course Bermuda grass like Tifton 85 is also good.
*Alfalfa is NOT the best choice for lambs in a feed lot or show lamb pen. It is a hot fiber and will raise the core rumen temp enough to provide an ideal habitat for Coccidia. Its rich profile tends to give some lambs more digestive upset and loose stools. It’s also expensive in comparison to other options.
*Alfalfa is a great high-quality roughage that will suit you better when it starts cooling down in the fall and start exercising in September.
This is just some practical advice that might not work for everyone but you might consider. One thing for sure, do provide hay daily for proper rumen function and development. Good luck with your sheep!
